Birchbox - May Edition Review

Hello friends,

So this month I have started something new, and that is a monthly subscription to a company called Birchbox, who will once a month send you a box of miniature beauty goodies. The reason I have decided to give this a go is because I am always keen to try new products and this lets me do this without the expense and risk of buying a full size sample.

So, I get home from work to a delivery note saying that Yodel had left my parcel in a safe place, but I couldn't decipher the writing to say where - after scratching my head for about 10 minutes I went to the shed and boom, there was my Birchbox.

Opening the package was exciting, what would be in my box?? Firstly, the box itself is cool - it is patterned and one of the things you get in the box is a little set of colouring pencils, which you can use to colour the box in. This has given me a lot of entertainment so far, and I have only coloured in a quarter of the box!

Delving inside the box itself, everything is contained within a drawstring bag - this is really useful, and could be used when travelling and you need a small bag to throw products into. Emptying the bag out, I found I had 7 products plus the colouring pencils, and I have since tried out most of them.

1. Nude ProGenius Omega Treatment Oil, retail price £58.
This is a hydrating oil which you use in the morning and evening after cleansing. I have used it for a couple of days and I do like the effect it has on my skin - after using it I definitely feel my skin is hydrated and it looks very healthy. I have a pretty decent skin routine, so I don't think at the moment I would splurge on this, but as a tester it is definitely a good one!

2. Stila Lip Glaze, retail price £15
I have had one of these as a tester before, and I find that it is very thick and glossy. Personally I don't like the feeling of heavy products on my lips, but it is a very pretty colour, so I wouldn't buy but will use if I fancy a sheer looking lip.

3. Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish, retail price £15.50
This product is a cleanser and a muslin cloth - you rub into dry skin and then wash off with the cloth and warm water. The cloth is lovely and soft, but I don't feel this product did anything special to my skin. Another nice tester but not one I will be buying.

4. Wah London Nail Art Pen, retail price £7
This is cool! It is a thin brush pen that you can use to do funky patterns on your nails. I went a little mad and now have 5 different patterns on my nails. The brush is very easy to use and I love it! This I would definitely consider buying in different colours as I like interesting nails.

5. Parlor Moisturising spray, retail price £17
This is a hair spray which adds texture and nourishes. I like the smell of this spray, but it leaves my hair feeling a little heavy. I am sticking to my coconut hair products for now I think!

6. Jelly Pong Bronzer Duo, retail price £15.95
I am a very pale person, and I think this bronzer is a little dark for me so I haven't tried it out. However I do love the packaging and the little mirror is a great addition.

7. Number 4 Lumiere d'Hiver Masque, retail price £36
This is a hair treatment, which I am going to use tonight - the ingredients include shea butter so I imagine I will like this, the only downside is I don't think there will be enough for my long thick hair.

This box costs about £12 a month, and I think that is a really great price for the variety of goods you get. I am looking forward to my June box and discovering more new goodies!

After Eight minis by Fantasy Cakes

Father Christmas clearly knows me well, as under the tree I had a new cake recipe book waiting; Fantasy Cakes by Angela Romeo and it is such a treat for the eyes to browse, and stomach for the wonderful cakes you could bake. It is a very clever book in that it has the standard cake recipes at the start which are used throughout the book. These so far have been so simple to throw together, which is very handy as I can leave the baby playing for 10 minutes to whip the cake up. You can order the book here , and I highly recommend it if you want to try some beautiful centre pieces or show stoppers. The first cake I tried is the After Eight minis, great as all the family were round to gobble up the end result.  This After Eight recipe took a while to assemble and create the individual elements however they can all be done in advance and individually rather than sitting down for a good couple of hours stretch. I had to alter the recipe slightly as I ran out of self raising fl...

Pasteils de nata - custard tarts

Pastry week on the Great British Bake Off saw Paull Hollywood set custard tarts as the technical challenge and I thought I would give them a go, seeing as I have never attempted them before! I own Paul's cookbook which has the recipe in, and it can also be found on the GBBO website. These two recipes vary slightly - in the book Paul doesn't make the rough puff pastry but uses shop bought (which I would normally do.) This being a Bake Off challenge though I decided to use the recipe they followed in the tent. The result - delicious buttery pastry filled with golden creamy custard. I ate 3 in one sitting! The tarts are quite fiddly and leaving the pastry to cool between rolling is essential to get the decent lamination and signature swirl on the bottom, so you will need to set aside a good couple of hours in total. As a side note, I found that I had a lot of left over custard - either I didn't make my tarts big enough or the recipe is rather generous with the por...

Bourbon Chocolate Brownies

There seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment for brownies with all kinds of sweets and biscuits added to the top to give an extra dimension to these absolute classic bakes. Doing the rounds on Instagram which caught my eye were Bourbon brownies, in particular Frances Quinn's version (Former GBBO winner). Her food imagination and photography is always beautiful and well worth checking out. I have used my own brownie recipe which combines cocoa and melted dark chocolate topped with neat rows of Bourbons, making a brownie which perfectly compliments a good cup of tea. Time to get dunking! Ingredients: 220g butter 180g caster sugar 150g light muscovado sugar 50g cocoa powder 50g dark chocolate (70%) 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 eggs 120g plain flour 1 packet of Bourbons - I used 13 ontop of my batter, but you can add more or less depending on how you want your brownies to look. Method: Preheat your oven to 180C/ 160C fan assisted and line a brownie tin. In ...
